It’s 3 a.m., and your mind has run the same worry around the track so many times you’ve lost count. It might be a test result you’re waiting on, a bill you can’t cover yet, or a child who stopped answering your texts. Your body is exhausted, but your thoughts won’t let it rest.
Feeling this way doesn’t mean you’re failing at faith, and God isn’t disappointed in you. Paul wrote “Don’t worry about anything” (Philippians 4:6, CSB) while he was imprisoned, so he knew what it was to have reasons to worry. Every prayer on this page was written for a night like this one.
A prayer for anxiety is a conversation where you tell God what you’re afraid of, ask for His peace, and hand Him what you can’t carry. Philippians 4:6-7 invites you to bring every worry to Him and promises that His peace will guard your heart and mind. You can start with the short prayer below, right where you are.
A Prayer for Anxiety You Can Pray Right Now
God, my mind is spinning and my chest feels tight, and I don’t know how to make it stop. I’m bringing You all of it, the worries I can name and the ones I can’t. Thank You that You’re not frustrated with me for feeling this way. Please quiet my thoughts and slow my breathing, and let Your peace settle over me like a warm blanket. Help me trust You with the parts I can’t fix tonight. In Jesus’ name, amen.
What Does the Bible Say About Anxiety?
The Bible doesn’t scold anxious people. It invites them to bring their worries to God, who cares about them and offers a peace deeper than understanding.
Over and over, Scripture meets worried people right where they are. Paul says to present your requests to God with thanksgiving (Philippians 4:6-7, CSB), and Peter says you can cast all your cares on Him (1 Peter 5:7, CSB). Jesus spoke to people who were worried about food, clothes, and tomorrow, and He told them to take life one day at a time (Matthew 6:34, CSB).
Feeling anxious doesn’t mean your faith is failing. The psalm writers admitted they were afraid and filled with cares, and they brought those feelings straight to God (Psalm 94:19, CSB; Psalm 56:3, CSB). Anxiety is something you can bring to God as it is, not something you have to clean up first.

How Do You Pray When You’re Anxious?
Slow your breathing, tell God exactly what you’re afraid of, hold onto one verse, and then hand the worry over to Him.
There’s no formula you have to get right, and God hears you whether you pray out loud, in a whisper, or with tears instead of words. These four steps are a gentle place to start when your mind won’t settle.
1Breathe and Come as You Are
Take a slow breath in and a longer breath out before you say a single word. You don’t need to calm down before you pray, and God isn’t waiting for you to pull yourself together first. Those few slow breaths give your body a moment to catch up with your heart, so you can notice that He is already right there with you. Come as you are, in your pajamas, in the car, or at the kitchen table with the dishes still in the sink.
2Name What You’re Afraid Of
Tell God the specific worry, even if it sounds small or silly when you say it out loud. Anxiety often feels like a heavy cloud with no edges, and naming it gives the fear a shape you can hand over. You might say, “I’m scared the test results will be bad,” or “I’m worried my son is struggling and won’t tell me.” God already knows what’s on your heart, but saying it to Him often makes the weight feel lighter.
3Hold Onto One Verse
Pick one short promise and repeat it slowly, like “When I am afraid, I will trust in you” (Psalm 56:3, CSB). When your thoughts are racing, a whole chapter can feel like too much, but a single verse is easy to hold onto. Write it on a sticky note by the sink or set it as your phone wallpaper, so it’s waiting for you the next time worry shows up.
4Hand It Over
Picture yourself setting the worry down in God’s hands, the way Scripture describes casting all your cares on Him (1 Peter 5:7, CSB). Then tell Him plainly that you’re trusting Him with it, even if your feelings haven’t caught up yet. If the same worry comes back an hour later, that doesn’t mean you did it wrong. You can hand it over again as many times as you need, and He will never grow tired of receiving it.
Save These 4 Steps for How to Pray When You’re Anxious

How Do I Pray During a Panic Attack?
Keep it very short. Breathe slowly and pray one simple line at a time, like “Lord, be near” on the breath in and “I trust You” on the breath out.
During a panic attack, long prayers can feel impossible, and that’s okay. A breath prayer pairs a few words with each breath, so your body and your heart can slow down together. You might breathe in on “You are with me” and breathe out on “I don’t have to be afraid,” then repeat it until the wave passes.
If panic attacks keep coming back, or if you ever have chest pain or trouble breathing that feels different, please call your doctor or get medical care right away. Praying and getting help go together, and God can use both.
Prayers for Anxiety You Can Pray Today
Find the moment you’re in below and pray it in your own voice. Change any words you’d like, because God cares about your heart far more than the script.
A Prayer for a Racing Mind
This prayer is for the moments when your thoughts won’t slow down long enough for you to pray in full sentences. It asks God to take your worries one at a time and to help you settle on what is true. It borrows from Isaiah 26:3, which describes a mind kept in peace because it rests on God.
God, my thoughts are running in circles, and every time I catch one, three more show up. I can’t sort them all out right now, so I’m handing them to You one at a time. Thank You that You already know every thought before I say it. Please slow my mind down and help me focus on what’s true instead of every what-if. Give me one quiet moment with You, and let that be enough for now. In Jesus’ name, amen.
A Prayer for When You Can’t Stop Overthinking
Overthinking often looks like replaying a conversation or rehearsing every way something could go wrong. This prayer admits that loop honestly and asks God to help you stop arguing with the what-ifs. It leans on Matthew 6:34, where Jesus tells us that tomorrow will worry about itself.
God, I’ve replayed the same conversation a dozen times today, and I’m still looking for the part I got wrong. My mind keeps building stories about what could happen next, and none of them end well. Thank You that You already know how this turns out, and You aren’t anxious about it. Please help me stop arguing with every what-if and leave tomorrow in Your hands. Give me enough peace to stay in today with You. In Jesus’ name, amen.
A Prayer for When Anxiety Comes for No Reason
Some days anxiety shows up without a reason you can name, and that can feel even more confusing than a worry you understand. This prayer gives you words for that unexplained heaviness and asks God simply to be near. You don’t have to know why you feel this way to bring it to Him.
Lord, nothing is wrong that I can point to, and still my chest is tight and my stomach is in knots. I don’t even know what to ask You for, because I can’t explain where this feeling came from. Thank You that I don’t have to understand it to bring it to You. Please sit with me in it, steady my breathing, and remind me that You are close. Help me be gentle with myself today. In Jesus’ name, amen.
A Short Prayer for Anxiety and Fear
When you only have a few seconds, a short prayer is easier to hold than a long one. This one is small enough to memorize and whisper in the car, the bathroom, or the checkout line. It borrows straight from Psalm 56:3: “When I am afraid, I will trust in you.”
God, I’m afraid right now, and I don’t have many words. When I am afraid, I want to trust in You. Thank You that You are with me in this exact moment. Please quiet my heart and hold me steady until this fear passes. I’m placing my worry in Your hands, and I’m choosing to lean on You. In Jesus’ name, amen.
A Prayer During a Panic Attack
This prayer is for the moment a panic attack begins, when your heart is pounding and the room feels too small. Pray it slowly, one line per breath, and stop to breathe as often as you need. If you’ve never had symptoms like this before, or they feel different than usual, please get medical care right away.
God, my heart is racing and I can’t catch my breath. I’m scared, and my body feels out of control. Thank You that You are right here, even in this. Help me breathe in slowly, and help me breathe out slowly. Remind me that this wave will pass and that I am not alone in it. Hold me steady until my body settles, and stay close to me afterward too. In Jesus’ name, amen.
A Morning Prayer for Anxiety
Morning anxiety can show up before you’ve even opened your eyes. This prayer hands the day to God before the to-do list takes over and asks Him to walk ahead of you. It echoes Matthew 6:34, which invites you to carry only today’s steps.
Good morning, God. I woke up with that familiar knot in my stomach before my feet even touched the floor. Thank You that Your mercies are new this morning, even when my worries feel old. Please walk with me into today, through the school drop-off, the inbox, and every conversation I’m dreading. When anxiety rises, remind me that You’re already in the day ahead of me. Help me take only today’s steps and leave tomorrow with You. In Jesus’ name, amen.
A Prayer for Anxiety at Work Before a Big Day
A big meeting, a presentation, or a first day can keep you up the night before. This prayer asks God for a clear head and a steady heart, not a perfect performance. It borrows from 2 Timothy 1:7, which reminds you that God gives power, love, and sound judgment instead of fear.
Lord, today matters, and I can feel the pressure sitting on my shoulders. I’ve prepared as much as I can, and I’m still nervous about the meeting and the people in it. Thank You that my worth doesn’t depend on how this goes. Please give me a clear mind, calm words, and the sound judgment You promise. Help me do my best work and leave the results with You. In Jesus’ name, amen.
A Bedtime Prayer for Anxiety and Sleep
Nighttime is often when anxious thoughts get loudest, because the house is finally quiet. This prayer sets the day down and asks God for rest. It borrows from Psalm 4:8, a prayer about lying down and sleeping in peace.
Lord, the house is quiet now, but my mind is still wide awake. I’m tired of replaying today and rehearsing tomorrow. Thank You for carrying me through this day, even the parts that felt heavy. As I lie down, I’m setting my worries in Your hands instead of holding them in mine. Please quiet my heart, rest my body, and watch over the people I love while we sleep. Let me lie down in peace, trusting that You are near. In Jesus’ name, amen.
A Prayer for Anxiety and Depression
Anxiety and depression often travel together, and when they do, even praying can feel like too much. This prayer is honest about that tiredness and asks God for strength for the next small step and for good help. It doesn’t ask you to pretend you’re fine.
God, some days the worry and the heaviness show up together, and I don’t have the energy to fight either one. I’m tired in a way sleep doesn’t fix. Thank You that You stay close to the brokenhearted and don’t ask me to pretend I’m fine. Please give me enough strength for the next small thing, and lead me to the people and care that can help me heal. Remind me that this season is not the end of my story. In Jesus’ name, amen.

A Prayer for Work and Money Worries
Money worries tend to circle back no matter how many times you check the numbers. This prayer asks God for wisdom for the next decision and peace while you wait. It reflects 1 Peter 5:7, which invites you to cast every care on God because He cares about you.
God, I’ve been staring at the numbers again, and they keep coming up short in my head. I’m worried about the bills, my job, and whether there will be enough. Thank You for every way You’ve provided before, even when I couldn’t see how. Please give me wisdom for the next decision and peace while I wait for answers. Help me do my part faithfully and trust You with what I can’t control. In Jesus’ name, amen.
A Prayer for Health Anxiety
Health anxiety can turn every small symptom into a worst-case story. This prayer asks God to calm those fears and give you patience while you wait for answers. It’s meant to go alongside your doctor’s care, never in place of it.
Lord, I’m waiting on test results, and every small symptom feels like bad news. My mind keeps jumping to the worst possible outcome. Thank You for the doctors and nurses who are caring for me, and for being with me in every waiting room. Please calm my fears and give me patience while I wait. Whatever the answer is, help me remember that I’m not facing it alone. In Jesus’ name, amen.
A Prayer Before a Doctor’s Appointment or Test
Sitting in a waiting room, listening for your name, can make your mind run ahead to every possible outcome. This prayer asks God to steady you before you walk in and to help you listen and ask good questions. It leans on Isaiah 41:10, where God says He will strengthen and help His people.
God, I’m sitting here waiting for my name to be called, and my mind is already running ahead of me. I’m nervous about what the doctor might say and what the test might show. Thank You that You are with me in this room. Please give me a steady heart, help me listen carefully, and help me remember the questions I want to ask. Strengthen me for whatever comes next. In Jesus’ name, amen.
A Prayer While Waiting for News
Waiting for a phone call, an email, or a decision can be harder than hearing hard news. This prayer is for the in-between, when you keep checking your phone. It borrows from Psalm 94:19, written by someone who was filled with cares and found comfort in God.
Lord, I keep checking my phone, waiting for news that hasn’t come yet. Every hour feels longer than the last, and my mind fills the silence with worry. Thank You that the waiting doesn’t hide me from You. When I am filled with cares, please let Your comfort bring me joy, even here. Help me keep living today while I wait, and give me peace with whatever the answer turns out to be. In Jesus’ name, amen.
A Prayer for Anxiety While Driving or Traveling
Some people feel anxious every time they get behind the wheel, board a plane, or watch someone they love drive away. This prayer asks God for calm and attention on the road. It asks for His presence rather than a guarantee, because that is the honest prayer.
God, my hands are tight on the wheel, and my mind keeps picturing everything that could go wrong on this trip. I’m anxious about the road, the traffic, and the miles ahead. Thank You that there is nowhere I can go where You are not with me. Please help me stay calm, alert, and patient, and settle my nerves. Be with the people I love who are traveling today too. In Jesus’ name, amen.
A Prayer Before a Hard Conversation
Dreading a hard conversation can take more energy than the conversation itself. This prayer asks God for kind words, honest courage, and a willingness to listen. It fits a talk with a spouse, a child, a friend, or a boss.
Lord, I have to talk about something hard today, and I’ve been dreading it all week. I’m afraid of saying the wrong thing or making it worse. Thank You that You go with me into this conversation. Please give me words that are honest and kind, and help me listen as much as I speak. Soften both of our hearts, and help us understand each other. In Jesus’ name, amen.
A Prayer for Anxiety Around Other People
Social anxiety can make a gathering, a phone call, or a new group feel exhausting before it begins. This prayer asks God to steady you and to help you rest in how He sees you. It also turns your focus outward, toward caring for the people in the room.
Lord, I’m nervous about walking into that room, and I’ve already rehearsed every awkward thing I might say. I worry about what people think of me more than I want to admit. Thank You that You already know me and love me completely. Please steady my heart and help me focus on caring for others instead of watching myself. Let me rest in who You say I am, not in how the conversation goes. In Jesus’ name, amen.
A Prayer for Anxiety About the Future
Not knowing what’s ahead can keep you trying to plan for every possible outcome. This prayer asks for just enough light for the next step. It borrows from Matthew 6:34, where Jesus says each day has enough trouble of its own.
God, I keep trying to see around the corner, and not knowing what’s coming scares me. I worry about my kids, my marriage, and what the next year will bring. Thank You that the future isn’t a mystery to You. Please help me stop borrowing tomorrow’s trouble and live this one day with You. Give me just enough light for the next step, and the trust to take it. In Jesus’ name, amen.
A Prayer to Trust God When Nothing Feels Certain
Sometimes the hardest part of anxiety is how little feels certain. This prayer doesn’t ask God to explain everything; it asks for help to trust Him while the questions stay open. It leans on Isaiah 26:3, which describes a mind kept in peace because it is trusting in Him.
God, so much in my life feels uncertain right now, and I want answers You haven’t given yet. I keep trying to hold everything together, and I’m tired. Thank You that You are steady when nothing else is. Please help me rest my mind on You instead of on every unknown. Teach me to trust You one day at a time, even while my questions stay open. In Jesus’ name, amen.
A Prayer for Anxiety About My Children
Worrying about your kids can feel like part of being a mom, but it can also keep you awake at night. This prayer hands each child back to God and asks for wisdom to guide them. You can say their names out loud as you pray it.
Lord, I’m worried about my children tonight. I worry about their friends, their choices, their hearts, and the things I can’t protect them from. Thank You that You love them even more than I do and that You see them when I can’t. Please guide them, surround them with good people, and give me wisdom to know when to speak and when to listen. Help me trust You with them. In Jesus’ name, amen.
A Prayer for My Child’s Anxiety About School
School can bring its own anxiety, for kids and teens and for the parents watching them walk into the building. This prayer is for a child facing tests, friendships, or a hard year. You can pray it over them in the morning or with them at bedtime.
God, my child is anxious about school, and I can see it in their quiet mornings and tight shoulders. Tests, friends, and pressure feel so big to them right now. Thank You that You go with them through every hallway and classroom. Please give them courage, a calm mind, and at least one kind friend. Help me notice what they need, and help them know they are deeply loved at home and by You. In Jesus’ name, amen.
A Prayer for Anxiety About My Marriage
Anxiety about your marriage can sit quietly in the background of every ordinary day. This prayer brings that worry to God honestly and asks for patience, understanding, and closeness. If anything at home makes you feel unsafe, please reach out for help as well as praying.
Lord, I’m worried about my marriage, and I’m not sure how to say it out loud. We’ve been distant, tired, and quick to misunderstand each other. Thank You for the good years and the love that brought us together. Please give us patience, honest words, and a willingness to listen. Draw us back toward each other, and show me my part in healing what feels strained. In Jesus’ name, amen.
A Prayer for a New Mom’s Anxiety
The weeks after a baby arrives can bring a kind of anxiety no one warned you about. This prayer is for the late-night feedings and the constant checking. If the worry feels heavy or you’re having frightening thoughts, please tell your doctor, because you deserve care and support too.
God, I love this baby more than I knew I could, and I’m more anxious than I’ve ever been. I check their breathing, second-guess every choice, and lie awake even when they sleep. Thank You for trusting me with this little life. Please give me rest when I can get it, wisdom for each feeding and fever, and people to help carry the load. Remind me that You are watching over us both. In Jesus’ name, amen.
A Prayer for a Loved One With Anxiety
Watching someone you love struggle with anxiety can leave you feeling helpless. This prayer asks God to surround them with peace and lead them to good help, and it asks Him to make you patient and present. You can say their name in place of “someone I love.”
God, I’m bringing You someone I love who is struggling with anxiety right now. It hurts to watch them carry so much worry, and I don’t always know what to say. Thank You that You love them even more than I do. Please surround them with Your peace, give them rest tonight, and lead them to the help and people they need. Show me how to be patient, gentle, and present with them. In Jesus’ name, amen.
A Prayer for God’s Peace That Surpasses Understanding
This last prayer borrows from Philippians 4:6-7, where Paul describes a peace that surpasses all understanding. It asks for that peace even before answers come. It’s a good prayer to come back to any time the worry returns.
God, I don’t understand everything that’s happening, and I may not get the answers I want today. Even so, I’m asking for the peace You promised, the kind that doesn’t depend on everything being fixed. Thank You that Your peace can guard my heart and mind when my feelings are all over the place. Please stand watch over my thoughts tonight and tomorrow. Teach me to come back to You every time the worry returns, and help me believe You are good. In Jesus’ name, amen.

Frequently Asked Questions About Prayer for Anxiety
A good prayer for anxiety is honest and simple: tell God what you’re afraid of, thank Him for being near, and ask for His peace. The short prayer at the top of this page is a good place to start, and you can change any words to make it your own.
The Bible invites you to bring every worry to God instead of carrying it alone. Philippians 4:6-7 and 1 Peter 5:7 both say you can hand your anxious thoughts to God, who cares about you.
Psalm 94:19, Psalm 56:3, and Psalm 4:8 are three short favorites, and Psalm 23 is a comforting one to read in full. Each was written by someone who felt afraid and brought that fear to God.
Feeling anxious is not a sin, and it doesn’t mean your faith is weak. The Bible is full of faithful people who felt afraid, and God met them with comfort instead of scolding.
Many people find that praying slows their thoughts and reminds them they aren’t alone, and Scripture promises God’s peace to those who bring Him their worries. Prayer works best alongside good care, so keep talking with your doctor or a counselor if anxiety is affecting your daily life.
Try this one: “Lord, I’m handing You today’s worries and tomorrow’s what-ifs. Please quiet my mind and let me rest in Your care. In Jesus’ name, amen.” Psalm 4:8 is also a sweet verse to say as you turn out the light.
You don’t have to choose, and if anxiety is making daily life hard, please do both. God works through doctors, counselors, and friends as well as through prayer.
